The Production Field Operations program is a career pathway for high school youth, has been developed through the collaborative efforts of a partnership involving EnCana Corporation/Cenovus Energy Ltd., SAIT Polytechnic, (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology), CAREERS: The Next Generation, Alberta Education and the South Eastern Alberta Partners for Youth Career Development. All stakeholders are proud to be able to offer this career pathway to our students!

This program provides an excellent career exploration opportunity for youth and at the same time helps to meet the labour market needs of the oil and gas industry in southeast Alberta. Industry needs trained, educated, and experienced individuals, and offers lucrative employment to individuals interested in pursuing careers in the oil and gas fields of our region.

Qualified students will have the opportunity to enroll in SAIT%u2019s Oil and Gas Production Field Operator certificate program while attending high school. Students receive CTS credits toward a high school diploma as well as a post-secondary certificate that meets industry standards.

Industry will provide a limited number of summer internships to link classroom learning to the work place. Grade 10 students who do not receive summer internships can continue with the PFO classroom learning in Grades 11 and 12 enabling them to achieve the PFO certificate from SAIT. In addition, Grade 10 students who have successfully completed the theory coursework may participate in the EnCana Energy Camp and the safety training programs.

Audience Targeted: GRADE 10s

To enter the PFO program, students begin in the Grade 10 year. It is a 3-year program therefore entrance is limited to Grade 10 students who meet the program criteria.

Program Criteria:

To be accepted into the PFO program a student must meet the following criteria:

  • Full time Grade 10 student
  • 90-95% attendance in school
  • Regularly on time for classes
  • Minimum academics required
    • Math 10C with plans to continue on to Math 30-1 or Math 30-2 (or Math 30 Applied or Pure)
    • English 10-1 or 10-2
    • Science 10 with plans to continue to Science 30, Chemistry 30 or Physics 30
  • Passing ALL courses with 60% or higher
  • Excellent school citizen (clean discipline record)
